Hello My Friends

You know how you start to really like a character, like, a whole lot, so when it comes time for them to exit the scene you start dragging your feet because you just don't want to do it, but it's really for the best because them going shoots the plot forward and you really need that, but you start looking for excuses as to why they neeeeeeeed to stay anyway, and how it'll be good for everyone if they do....

nah, but they need to go.

*wipes eyes* I'll miss you.

"Kill your darlings" doesn't just apply to particularly pretty paragraphs or scenes. It applies to beloved characters, too. I hate it when a character presents itself and builds itself, twining through the narrative and relationships with other characters...and then it becomes unavoidably obvious they must A. die, B. become evil, C. Do another beloved character some unforgiveable harm, in order for the plot to continue to its maximum effect.

I've tried to write around it, to substitute another action, or sacrifice a less-beloved (and therefore less important) character, and it always ends up futile and has to be rewritten the "right" way. And it always hurts.

But, you know as well as I that the payoff is the emotional hit and the dealing with the afters by those left on the page. And those reading.

Oh my goodness, so very true. And this character is so behind the scenes, that I know I'm the only one who'll mourn them, lol! They have this huge backstory that wasn't necessary for the reader to know, but I know it! And it makes them totally sympathetic to me, even if they really are not kind of...good. Ish. You know what I mean.

I didn't start off with the idea that they'd have to go – like you say, they kind of grew as the story grew, and sort of became a champion of sorts. I didn't even k now until last week what they were up to. There you have it. Characters having this whole other life that they spring on you at the last moment. I had a plan, I tell you!

I hope the payoff is good. *sniffle*
And thank you! *hugs*
